1833 Newspaper Ads: Finding a Home
In addition to apartments of two or three rooms, houses were also advertised for rent. Here are a couple of notices:
HOUSE, Furnished or unfurnished---To be LET, a well FURNISHED HOUSE, for a term to expire at Lady-Day, 1835, pleasantly situated in the high road, near Euston-square, containing good kitchens, handsome dining and drawing rooms, with 5 bed rooms. Rent only 50s a week [note: 50 shillings]. The son of the lady leaving would continue to occupy the parlours if agreeable to the party taking the house. The house would be let at a very reduced rent unfurnished, if wanted. For cards, apply at Mr. Hollier's library, 65 Judd-street, Brunswick-square.
PORTLAND PLACE---Superior Residence, Furnished--Mr. Phillips respectfully announces that he is authorized to LET, Furnished or Unfurnished, a spacious residence with lofty suites of apartments and numerous chambers and domestic offices, replete with comfort, and suitable to the accommodations of a large family of respectability. The mansion is elegantly and appropriately furnished, having coach-house for 4 carriages, and stabling for 6 horses, with laundry, etc, and may be entered on immediately. To be viewed only by tickets, to be had at Mr. Phillips, 73,Bond-street.
If you prefer the suburbs:
ECONOMY, HEALTH, and a delightful COUNTRY RESIDENCE---to be LET, TWO genteel and compact COUNTRY COTTAGES; containing 6 and 8 rooms, small garden, chaise house and stable if wanted; may be had furnished or unfurnished, within 4 miles of the city, in a highly respectable, dry, and healthy situation, commanding a fine view over an extended and rich landscape. Conveyance to the city frequent and cheap. Good tradesmen, with all the advantages of town and country combined. Rent furnished, one guinea a week; unfurnished, 25s. Or, more upscale and spacious:
EDEN LODGE, situate on the borders of Kent and Surrey, with 10 or 15 acres of land attached thereto, on the road from Beckenham to Wickham, to be LET, Furnished or unfurnished. Possession may be had in the first week of November, or, if preferred, at Christmas next. To those who are acquainted with this delightful villa, it is unnecessary to enter into particulars. To those who are not, information may be had at the proprietors, at Eden Cottage, adjoining the grounds of the above. Should the cottage, with 3 acres, be preferred to the lodge,it is at the option of the applicant. Plans may be seen at the offices of Brooks and Co., Old Bond-street.
For the really well-to-do:
CAPITAL RESIDENCE and about 22 ACRES OF LAND, Southend, Kent, 8 miles from London--To be LET, upon LEASE, by Messrs. Driver, a remarkably convenient FAMILY DWELLING-HOUSE, commanding delightful and extensive views and containing 8 good sleeping apartments with dressing rooms, sundry servants' bedrooms, spacious entrance hall, large dining and drawing rooms, convenient library, kitchen, and all other suitable domestic offices, detached is a double coach-house, 5-stall stable, dairy, and various commodious out-buildings; together with lawn, pleasure grounds, paddock, and 18 acres of capital meadow land. For particulars and terms apply to xxxx.
Looking to buy that rare commodity called land? If you can afford it, some is for sale. Notice the particulars regarding tithes, heriots, etc. These fees and feudal obligations date from the middle ages, and in 1833 still existed.
BURWASH, Sussex---Valuable freehold Land and farm buildings---to be SOLD BY AUCTION, without reserve, by Mr. T. P. Durrant, at the Rose and Crown Inn, Burwash, on Wednesday, the 9th day of October, at 6 o'clock in the afternoon, by direction of the devisees in trust for sale under the will of Mr. John Vigor, gentleman, deceased, late of Burwash. This valuable property consists of corn barn, 2 hay barns, 2 stables, 5 lodges, a chaisehouse, and several enclosures of rich meadow and pasture land, hop ground, arable land, and coppice, in a high state of cultivation, containing together 38 acres, little more or less, situate near the town of Burwash and now in the occupation of Mr. Baldock. This estate is freehold of inheritance; the land tax is redeemed. The land is subject to quit rents amounting to 3s, 4p per annum, and to heriots and other services to the lords and ladies of the manors of Giles and of Woodknowle and Mottingsden respectively. VALUABLE FREEHOLD and TITHE-FREE ESTATES in the Vale of Belvoir.--to be sold by AUCTION (place and date given). Lot 1--A very valuable Freehold Estate, tithe-free and land-tax redeemed, situate at Orston in the vale of Belvoir, in the county of Nottingham, containing in the whole 480 acres divided into convenient farms, which are occupied by highly respectable tenants.
